Elle Starlight is a Los Angeles-based, modern artist who draws inspiration from her surroundings and is heavily influenced by her background in graphic design.

Her art career began way back in 2001 when she attended New York University majoring in studio art. Studying the foundation of many different art-forms, Elle gravitated toward painting and made that her primary focus. Bold color has always been her signature, however subject matter has changed considerably over the years.

In 2005, Elle graduated from NYU and immersed herself in art, music, love, and life. She participated in group shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan and in 2009, Elle completed her post-graduate work at NYU, earning a master’s degree in Art Education. She showcased her thesis titled, An Exquisite Corpse, which was an exploration into the allure of slasher films and their effect on viewers. Elle completed seven, large-scale oil paintings and was given the opportunity to discuss her work with a panel of professionals.

Around this time, Elle made graphic design a career choice, while continuously searching for overlap in her digital and analog art-making. Her obsession with color grew, her skills sharpened, however she was feeling the weight of the NYC winters and in 2014, she decided to move to Los Angeles to chase that eternal sunshine.

Living in a house by the beach on the heels of a tiny NYC apartment, Elle experienced a major culture shift and thus her work has changed dramatically. Her color palette has taken on sunset hues and her subject matter mirrors that which she sees outside her window. Elle uses her background in graphic design to deconstruct the wild, California coastline, creating beautiful, geometric abstractions. She is obsessed with color and each painting is truly an organic process. The color grows like wildflowers, each one a foundation for the next. They build upon each other and each work becomes truly unique to itself.

Drawing inspiration from the surf / skate culture in the area, Elle finds boards and decks that are ready to be retired and breathes new life into them, honoring their past and giving them a spotlight to shine again. In her current work, you’ll notice the cool blues of the ocean, the sun-kissed warmth of a day ending, and an exploration of overlapping shapes to create dimension and movement.

Most recently, Elle has found a way to marry her love of color, abstraction, and portraiture in her newest mural titled, Frida in Flowers. She continues to explore new avenues for expression and believes that art should be for everyone. Painting murals is a way for her to spread her own brand of colorful joy everywhere she goes.

Elle is open for commissions and design work.
